Irene’s Ghost – a film about postpartum psychosis

Inspired by the birth of his own daughter, director Iain Cunningham sets out to discover the truth about what happened to his mother Irene, who passed away when he was just three, and who has remained a mystery to him all these years.
Piecing together fragments of the past to makes sense of the present, Iain uncovers his family’s long-held secret – that Irene suffered from postpartum psychosis. Mixing animation with filmed footage, Irene’s Ghost movingly rebuilds a lost life, and explores the effects that mental illness can have on a family.
