Whether it’s school, news or day-to-day stresses that leave you feeling tense and worried, it always helps to take a moment to breathe, relax and do something enjoyable without any pressure.

To give you some ideas, we’ve prepared a small selection of fun but simple activities that all ages will be able to enjoy from home. Never tried these? Great! Let’s get started.

Colouring in is a great way to relax, so how about printing off our activity sheet and brightening it up? This activity sheet is also a great way to consider your mental health: thinking about what worries you, what helps you feel better and who can offer support.

You can download and print the sheet using the link below. Just follow the instructions on the sheet and get those coloured pencils, pens and crayons ready!

Feeling particularly creative? Try drawing yourself with the umbrella, your own worry raindrops and the people who make you feel better.

This activity can be done by yourself, but it can also be done in a group of family members or friends.

Try drawing a local building, park or space you know well as accurately as you can. If you feel like a particular challenge (and a few laughs) you could also try drawing it from memory.

Add an element of competition by having your whole family (or a friend online) do the same and see who remembers their chosen place most accurately.

Once finished you could exchange drawings to colour each other’s artwork in. Alternatively, don’t tell other people where your drawing is meant to be and then see if they can guess from the drawing you create!

What will your scrapbook contain?

Most people tend to collect images they like online through the likes of Instagram, but creating your own physical scrapbook remains an enjoyable activity that can be done with no social pressure and for your own enjoyment.

All you need to get started is an empty book of your choice, scissors and glue, or sticky tape. Where you get your pictures from is up to you but you could start by looking through magazines, your own photos, old picture books you don’t mind cutting up or printed images off the internet. You could even use some fabrics or fancy patterned paper!

Try collecting together images that make you feel happy, relaxed or otherwise conjure up good memories. You don’t have to fill it out all at once, just maybe add a few extra images a day. You’ll likely find that this process becomes addictive and satisfying!

Once complete, the book could make for a nice go-to when you want to sit down and make yourself feel better. You could show it to your family or collaborate with them on it in the first place.

You could even hide it away as a kind of time capsule to be discovered a few years from now, letting you rediscover your thoughts, feelings and likes from this time, in the future.


Prepare a devious treasure hunt

Your treasure doesn’t have to be gold! Just make sure it’s fun!

Everyone loves a good mystery, so why not prepare a treasure hunt around the home for your family to solve!

What the treasure itself will be is up to you (make it something good!) but try making a series of interesting clues for your hunters to find, with one leading to the next.

You could try one or a combination of the following:

  • Pictorial clues such as photos or your own drawings suggesting where to go next.
  • A riddle to be solved in order to get the next answer.
  • Completion of a puzzle such as a crossword or drawn maze to find the correct clue.

Remember to make your treasure hunt fair and ensure the hiding places are safe – clues should be a mental rather than physical challenge to find! You may also want to prepare extra hints to help your participants if they struggle!
