  • Location: Remote, regular travel to London will be required

Background Information

We’re looking for an exceptional Head of Marketing and Communications to join our team, and make sure our message and our work reach as wide an audience as possible.

It’s an exciting time to join Our Time. We are featuring in a high profile programme on national television; our podcast My Family, Mental Illness and Me, launched last year, made it into the top 5% of downloads worldwide and was featured in the national press; we won silver at the Charity Film Awards; and we are about to roll out a number of new outreach projects through our flagship programmes:  KidsTime Workshops and Our Time Schools.

Now, we need to build on these successes by raising awareness and our profile even further, so we can help more young people living with parental mental illness.


You will lead on the marketing and communications strategy and implementation for Our Time, reporting directly to the CEO. This will include but is not limited to:

  • Developing Our Time’s messaging architecture; ensuring core messaging remains engaging, relevant, and accurate; and overseeing brand alignment across all marketing and communications materials.
  • Identifying key audiences – stakeholders, funders, supporters and the families with which we work – and targeting effectively and appropriately.
  • Promoting Our Time’s core projects – the KidsTime Workshops, Our Time Schools and professional training – to potential partners and backers.
  • Maximising opportunities for expanding our services, and spreading our message, to include the production of marketing campaigns, materials and content.
  • Generating and managing marketing assets for Our Time, including setting up and running video and photo shoots, gathering case studies and storing all assets appropriately.
  • Generating and managing media coverage for our activities and cause, building relationships with relevant journalists and outlets.
  • Writing articles for the website, newsletters, press releases, and communication on behalf of the CEO.
  • Developing and overseeing the production of the second series of our podcast.
  • Working alongside our Web and Visual Brand Manager and Fundraising Manager.
  • Line managing our Lead Designer and our Social Media Content Creator and Community Manager.

Person Specification

Essential experience and qualifications

  • Experience of working across both marketing and communications in the not-for-profit sector
  • Proven track record of designing and implementing effective marketing and communications strategies, with demonstrable results
  • Experience of effective media relations management, and gaining positive media coverage
  • Accustomed to working across a number of different projects and with a range of stakeholders
  • Writing for external audiences to a high standard, including for the web
  • Understanding of workings and value of social media
  • Degree in a relevant subject field

Desirable experience and qualifications

  • Experience working in the mental health or families charitable sector
  • Marketing or communications qualification
  • Experience of working alongside fundraising colleagues to ensure effective pitching

  • High level written and spoken communication
  • Proactive and creative self-starter, willing to act on your own initiative
  • Able to work independently and remotely, but also as part of a small team alongside colleagues
  • Confident at dealing with stakeholders at all levels and in many roles
  • Highly organised and comfortable working at pace across a number of projects
  • Attention to detail
  • Confident on Twitter, and at overseeing other social media platforms
  • Good understanding of GDPR and safeguarding regulations

Desirable skills

  • Interest in children’s mental health and wellbeing
  • Confident using Mailchimp, Canva, WordPress, Salesforce and the G-Suite
